I tend to make my kids’ costumes every year rather than shelling out the money to buy pre-made ones. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend hours perfecting the costume because many ideas are super simple to execute. 1 Dog or Cat
What kid doesn’t love dogs and cats? Engage that love of animals because this is one of the easiest DIY Halloween costumes for kids. If your child has a brown or black pair of sweats with a matching sweatshirt, you’re set. Simply add a headband with felt ears hot glued on and use a safety pin to attach a tail to the seat of the pants. Use face paint to add whiskers and spots and you’re done.

2 Jailbird
This is a super cute and easy idea for a baby. All you have to do is stick strips of electric tape to a white onesie and safety pin a plaque with a prisoner number on the front. Add a pair of black pants and you’re done. This is also a great way to make a referee costume. Your other kids could be football players or wrestlers.

To make this easy costume, start by spray painting a large box with silver spray paint. Cut out holes for your child’s arms, legs and head. Then use colored construction paper, stickers and paint to make the knobs and gadgets that make any robot complete. Easy, right?
4 Bag of Jelly Beans
This is a fun and unique costume that no one else in the Halloween parade is going to have. Take a large, clear plastic bag and cut two holes for legs. Have your child step into the bag and pull it up. Make arm holes, then fill the bag with colored balloons that are blown up and tied. Loosely tie the bag around your child’s shoulders and presto! He’s a bag of jellybeans. Or gumballs.
5 Lego
All kids love Legos, so what better idea for a Halloween costume? Start by gluing round take out containers to the front and back of a large cardboard box. Spray paint the entire thing red, blue, green, black or yellow. Once the paint dries, cut holes for arms, legs and your child’s head. Add a sweat suit underneath that matches the color of the Lego.
6 Superhero
Any kid would love to be a superhero, on Halloween and every other day of the year. Fortunately, you can easily make your child a costume. Cut a cape from felt, then use hot glue and felt shapes to make your child’s favorite superhero insignia. Pair the cape with sweats and your little one will be warm and adorable while you go trick or treating.
7 Paper Doll
Little girls love paper dolls and making a costume that mimics them is one of the easiest things you’ll ever do. Start by sketching the clothes, hat and shoes on sturdy cardboard. Don’t forget to add the tabs. Color or paint everything and cut it out. Use hot glue to add felt loops on the back of the clothing. Then help your child slip her arms and legs through the straps and you’re done.
