1. Choose a Container

When you buy a diffuser set in the store, they come with a container that is already filled with oil. If you happen to have one of these already, you can simply reuse it. However, if you don’t and you are making your own reed diffuser, you need to find a good container. I find that glass containers with a narrow neck are the best. Other than that, you can choose whatever container you like the best.

2. Reeds

After you get your container, you need to get some reeds to put in it. While you can buy reeds at a health food store, they can be quite expensive. You can, however, save quite a bit of money by purchasing your reeds on websites like Amazon, where they sell in packs of 50 for a very low price. If you do purchase a large pack, it will last you for quite awhile because you only need 4 to 5 reeds for a diffuser.

3. Carrier Oil

When you make your own diffuser, you can’t just fill it with essential oil. You also need a carrier oil that will act as the base. Almond oil, safflower oil, and grapeseed oil are all great choices for a carrier oil because they are light and have a neutral scent. Unless your container is very large, you only need a quarter cup of carrier oil, which means your carrier oil will also last a long time.

4. Essential Oil

The next step is probably the most fun. This is where you get to choose your essential oil. You can choose whatever scent you want, just be sure to use 20 to 25 drops. Lavender is one of my favorite scents, but you can use whatever you want. You can even mix the oils together to make combination scents. My favorite mixture is lavender and lemon. 5. Consider the Room

When you are choosing the essential oil, consider the room where the diffuser is being placed. Relaxing scents like lavender are great for bedrooms, and citrus scents are perfect for the kitchen and living spaces because they are bright and cheery.

6. Place in a Safe Place

Be sure the place you put your diffuser is away from children and pets. They can easily knock over diffusers, which can result in you having a patch of carpet that is more fragrant than you would like. Personally, I always keep mine on a top shelf on the bookcase. It is safe from children and pets, and the room still smells wonderful.

7. Use What You Have

When you are making your own reed diffuser, it can be tempting to buy everything new. However, the great thing about making your own diffuser is that you can save money. Old items like bud vases and jelly jars make great containers and any neutral oil will suffice. You may need to get reeds and essential oil, but these can bought quite economically online.

Having a diffuser in your house can really make a room smell wonderful. Thankfully, they are easy to make on your own, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money for a diffuser kit. Have you ever made your own diffuser?
