Did you know that there are a ton of different ways to use charcoal? Recently, a friend told me several different ways that she uses charcoal around her house, so I decided to put some of her tips to the test. At first, I was a bit skeptical, but I’m happy to say that the tips I received really worked, so I wanted to share them with you. If you've been wondering what to do with charcoal besides grilling, you're in for a surprise. Here are 7 uses for charcoal that will transform your home.

Quick Checklist for Charcoal Hacks:

1. Odor Eliminator

I have to be honest: I really didn't expect this to work, but it does. Charcoal can be used to eliminate odors in a variety of different places, such as your bathroom or basement. Keep in mind that it doesn't eliminate odors instantly, but after a couple of days, you will notice a huge difference. Charcoal can also be placed in the bottom of trash cans to eliminate odors, as well. In my opinion, this is one of the best ways to put charcoal around the house.

2. Homemade Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers can be expensive, so why not make your own? To make a charcoal dehumidifier diy, you will need a container that has a lid such as an empty coffee can. Simply fill the can with charcoal and put the lid on tightly. Be sure to punch some holes in the top of the lid. If you don’t have an empty coffee can, you could also use an empty bowl that has a lid on it. This is a great way to save money while keeping your home dry. (See how it also helps with Odor Elimination).

| Use Case | Benefit | Best Location | | --- | --- | --- | | Odor Elimination | Removes stubborn smells | Bathroom, Basement | | Dehumidifier | Controls moisture levels | Closets, Pantries | | Rust Prevention | Protects metal tools | Garage, Toolbox |

3. Keep Books Mold Free

Have you ever noticed that sometimes books that have been stored in a closed bookcase have mold on them? One way to prevent this is by putting some charcoal in the bookcase with them. You will be surprised by how fresh your books smell, as well. If you love preserving your library, this is a must-try tip for any book lover.

4. Fun Gag Gift

Have you ever thought about giving someone a lump of coal for Christmas because they've been naughty? If so, a piece of charcoal could come in handy. Simply grab a piece of charcoal and put a pretty red bow on it. It will be an inexpensive gift that the recipient will remember for years. Keep in mind that if you give someone a gag gift this Christmas, they may return the favor next year.

5. Sidewalk Art

Drawing with sidewalk chalk is a great way for kids to show their creative side. If you’re out of chalk, but your kids still want to draw on the sidewalk, let them use charcoal instead. It works well and can be easily washed off. Plus, sidewalk chalk typically comes in bright colors, so kids may enjoy having a different color to draw with. It's a fun and free way to encourage more creative DIY projects around the home.

6. Prevent Rust

My husband works in construction, so he has a lot of tools. Unfortunately, many of the tools that he has had for a while have started to rust. We have found that putting a couple of pieces of charcoal down in each of his tool boxes helps prevent tools from rusting. The charcoal absorbs moisture before it can damage the metal. 7. Keep Flowers Fresh

I love getting fresh flowers! But I’m always sad when it’s time to throw them away. If you place a few pieces of charcoal in the bottom of your vase of flowers, it will extend the length of time that you can keep them. The charcoal helps filter the water and keep it clean. As you can see, there are many different ways to use charcoal. From what charcoal does in your home to help with odors to keeping your garden blooms lasting longer, it's a versatile tool.
