If you have been a little leery of DIY cleaning products, you should know that can save you a lot of money. Cleaning supplies can be very expensive. I often notice that when I buy cleaning supplies my grocery bill is significantly more. However, when I make the effort to use and make DIY cleaning products, my grocery bill is much less. Thankfully, there is not much effort required to make your own cleaning supplies, and, as you will see, you only need a few ingredients.
1. All-Purpose Cleaner
Windex is a cleaning product that most people keep around the house as an all-purpose cleaner. Even though it works well, Windex is costly, especially in comparison to the DIY cleaning products you can make on your own. All you need to make your own all-purpose cleaner are water and vinegar! Just put equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle for your own cleaner. It works great and you can even add essential oils for a cleaner that smells good.
2. Wood Cleaner
Pledge was something my mom used all the time to clean wood. It leaves the wood shiny and clean, but you can make your own wood cleaner that works just as well for much less. A simple recipe for wood cleaner is 2 teaspoons of olive oil mixed with 2 cups of water and cup of white vinegar. Put this mixture in a spray bottle and use it to make all your wood furniture clean.
3. Floor Cleaner
A lot of cleaning supplies that are used to clean floors are quite expensive, but you can make your own and save money. To make your own floor cleaner, mix equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol with a half teaspoon of dish soap. This basic mixture will clean all floors, including wood!
4. Mildew Cleaner
Cleaning mildew or mold on bathroom tiles can be such a pain. Sometimes it requires a lot of scrubbing, and you still feel like you have not gotten anywhere. However, you can make your own mildew cleaner that works quite well. Just mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts water. Spray this solution onto the mildew and wait an hour. Then, come back and wipe the area clean.
5. Dishwasher Soap
I am always shocked at how much dishwasher soap costs. Liquid and powder dishwasher detergents are equally expensive, and, if you want a nontoxic detergent, you will pay much more. A cheap, nontoxic alternative to store bought dishwasher detergent is a simple mixture you can make at home. Combine one part baking soda with one part borax, and put one to two tablespoons in your dishwasher. You will have shiny, clean dishes for a fraction of the cost.
6. Scouring Powder
Scouring powders like Comet are great for getting rid of grease, but they are toxic and you can make your own on a budget. Mixing together equal amounts of baking soda, salt, and borax will provide you with an effective scouring powder that is easy and inexpensive to make.
7. Laundry Detergent
To make your own laundry detergent, all you have to do is mix together one bar of shaved soap with one cup of borax and one cup of washing soda. It is easy to make and you will save a lot of money since you only need 1 tablespoon for a regular load and 2 to 3 tablespoons for a large load.
DIY cleaning products are surprisingly easy to make, and you don’t need to have a lot of ingredients on hand. Water, vinegar, baking soda, borax, and a few extras are all you really need for inexpensive and effective cleaning supplies. Which of these DIY cleaning products will you try making?
