1

Set Aside Time

The first thing you need to do when you are trying to organize stacks of paper is to set aside time that you can devote to getting organized. If you are a person who likes to get everything done in one day, set aside a day and devote it to organizing your papers. However, if you tend to get overwhelmed by paperwork, it is best to give yourself two to three hours at a time. You may not get done in one day, but at least you won’t be so overwhelmed that you give up.

2

Go to the Office Supply Store

Before you start organizing, it is a good idea to have the supplies you are going to need on hand. Three ring binders and dividers with pockets are items that are always useful when you are dealing with papers. Also, you may want to get a storage box for papers that you don’t need very often, but are too important to get rid of. Other items that are useful include paper clips, a three hole punch, a stapler, and a shredder for shedding documents with private information.

3

Consider Investing in a Filing Cabinet

While three ring binders are great, if you have a lot of papers you may want to consider investing in a filing cabinet. Filing cabinets are a wonderful way to keep all of your papers organized and in one place. They can be expensive, but the cost may be worth it depending on your situation.

4

Enlist Help

Let’s face it, no one wants to do paper work, but with help it can go much faster. Have a friend or loved one help you go through your papers. They can punch holes or shred papers. Basically, they are there to help, and they can do whatever you need them to. They will also help keep you from getting lonely while you are doing an unwelcome job.

5

Divide Accordingly

Once you get started, you need to separate the papers in a way that makes sense. For example, you should have a designated place for insurance documents, medical information, taxes, etc. Make sure you aren’t too general when you are dividing papers, otherwise you won’t be able to find anything.

Throw out

As you are sorting through papers, be sure you are tossing papers that you no longer need or are outdated. This will help you get a handle on all of the papers. It will also greatly cut down on the amount of papers that you are left with, which is always nice.

7

Find a Place to Put It All

If you are not using a filing cabinet, you need to find a place to keep your binders. A bookcase is a great place, but closets also work. You can also keep them in a desk drawer. Wherever you decide to keep your newly organized papers, just be sure they are easy to get to.

Seeing stacks of papers lying around your house can be overwhelming. However, with a little effort it is possible to get the papers organized so you can finally see the table! Do you have papers you need to organize?
