9 Natural Ways to Get Rid of Ants in Your Home ...

By Neecey

Uh oh – if you’re looking for ways to get rid of ants it means you’ve already been invaded or it’s a regular occurrence and you want to be pre-armed. Though tiny, ants invade en masse. And they can also be very stubborn. I had a nest on my lawn close to my front door and every year I thought I was successful in killing them all off, but no, the next year comes and so do the ants. The only way I could get rid of them, because it was obviously such a great site for them to keep coming back to, was to dig the whole patch of soil out (bigger than the nest area) and refill it with brand new soil. I hope you never have to resort to something similar and that some of these natural ways to get rid of ants work for you.

1

Cinnamon

One of the easiest ways to get rid of ants is to use ground cinnamon around the doors, floors, and windowsills. You may also consider spraying cinnamon essential oil around areas where the ants are coming in – it will keep them out. Using the combination of cinnamon and cloves may also help in this situation – just sprinkle it right in their path to keep them at bay. Using ground cinnamon is a good idea because you don't have to go through a lot of hassle to clean it afterwards

2

Peppermint

It is possible to keep ants out simply by spraying peppermint essential oil around doors and windows or any entries. It will make your house smell good as well.

3

Vinegar

Using vinegar is definitely among the simplest ways to get rid of ants. Simply make a mixture of water and vinegar and use this solution for cleaning your kitchen counters and mopping the floors. You will soon see those ants leaving your house for good.

4

Borax, Sugar, and Water

A mixture of sugar, borax, water, and some peanut butter may help keep ants out of your property. If you use this solution, be sure to wait a bit, as it may take a couple of weeks to see results, but the impact will be quite powerful. Another alternative is to mix sugar, water, and borax, and make a paste of it. Now, spread this thin paste on a small piece of stiff cardstock or cardboard and place it near their points of entry. If you find an ants' nest in your house and don't want them swarm into your bedroom, make a sugary borax-y syrup to attract the ants – they will take it in to the nest thinking it's sugar, and this will eventually kill the queen. This solution works quite well for flying ants.

5

Mixture of Hot Water and Dish Soap

Keeping your food sealed up is a good way of keeping ants at bay, but that's usually not enough. It is a good idea to find their nest/hill and pour hot boiling water on it to kill them all. For better effects, add a squirt of liquid dish soap to the water.

Diatomaceous Earth

If you don't know much about how to get rid of ants, try diatomaceous earth (DE). It works well, but you need to ensure that you're opting for food-grade DE, not the one used in swimming pools. The food-grade DE is completely safe – you can even sprinkle it inside your house and around it to keep ants out. The only thing is that you should try to keep it dry or it will not be as effective as it should be. Sprinkling DE works well in case of a serious invasion, and it produces immediate results as well.

7

Chalk

Okay, it's time now to draw the line to keep those pesky ants away. How can you do it? Use chalk and those ants won't dare crossing it. You may also consider using calk powder – you can get it from different home improvement stores. Use it to draw a line around your windows and doors.

8

Powdered Sugar and Baking Soda

How many of you know that ants carry a type of acidic substance with them? They use it for protection, and you can take it as a weakness. To exploit it, simply mix powdered sugar and baking soda together, and place it around your windows and in other strategic places. It will take you some time to see its effect, but those ants will eventually die.

9

Coffee Grounds

One of the most effective and probably the least expensive ways to get rid of ants is to put used coffee grounds in the cracks or anywhere else in your house to keep them away.

If you don’t want to use poisons or chemical you should find success with these ways to get rid of ants – they may take a little longer but they will work. Have you ever been plagued by ants? How did you get rid?
