7 Creative Things to do with Old Books ...

Everyone has old books lying around the house, but did you know that there are so many creative things to do with old books? Why let your books that you already read sit and collect dust, when they can be made into something new and useful? Plus it is a great way to recycle and go green! And finding things to do with old books really isn’t as hard as you might think! Here are a few of my favorites.

Book-Shelves

Book-Shelves This is no regular bookshelf, this is a shelf made out of a book! What a fun idea! Not only are you putting an old book to a new use, but you are also creating more space for other things like little knick-knacks or decorations. All you need to do is hang up some shelving brackets and set the books in place. Easy right? This is just one of all the super easy and creative things to do with old books and there are plenty more!

Book Boxes

Book Boxes This one is super easy. A box made from a book is literally just taking a book and cutting a nice rectangle out to make the book hollow. You could also glue the pages together if you want to make it more sturdy but there really isn’t too big of a need for that. I tried this a few years ago and it works great!

Book Headboard

Book Headboard Having a creative headboard can draw a lot of attention in a room. And this one will definitely do just that. I never thought of using old books as a headboard but this is a really great idea! And it is pretty easy to make too. Just get a lot of old books, lay them out on a good-sized piece of wood and nail them in place. Not a lot of work for an awesome outcome!

Book Lamp

Book Lamp How cool is this book lamp? However, it takes a while to make it look so nice! I wouldn’t suggest trying this as your first book project but after you have some practice you should definitely give it a go! You’re going to need a few materials including a hardcover book, plywood, electrical material, and some paint. It is probably going to take a few days to complete so it is great for a long-term project. First you’ll want to cut the pages from the book and create a frame from the plywood. Next comes the electrical part which I would definitely have some trouble with. So this might take some determination and hard work. But once you finish it, it is sure to pay off! I really want to go try this now!

Book Planter

Book Planter Books take you to outside places and new worlds all of the time, so why not bring the outside world to the book? By having a book planter, it can create a much better look in your home than having a potted plant. And it is really simple to accomplish. Simply cut a rectangle out of the book, seal it with Mod Podge and cling wrap, fill with soil, and add moss and flowers! It’ll give a great new look to those worn out pages!

Book Marks

Book Marks Did you ever think of using an old book to help you keep your place in your new book? Neither did I! But I am so glad I stumbled upon this because now I am definitely going to try it out. All you have to do is cut the bind off of a hardcover book, straighten it out, cut a whole in the top, and attach it to string. Ta-Da! Instant bookmark!

Book Clock

Book Clock Think that your old book is out of date? Well you can help it keep up with the times by turning it into this gorgeous clock! This is such a cute design that I want to try this one too! What you’ll need is a hardcover book, clock movement, a knife, glue, scissors, and a clock battery. Doesn’t sound too hard so far right? From here, you’ll need to hollow out the book for the clock movement, punch a hole in the cover, assemble the clock pieces, and finally add the battery. Not too bad at all! And in the end, you’ll be able to keep the time with your old book!

You may not read your old books anymore but that doesn’t mean you should throw them away! There are so many uses for old books that are helpful and easy. So take those old books off the shelves and work your magic on them! Which of these projects do you want to try?
