7 Simple DIY Projects for Dog Owners ...

By A.J.

Byron (my Basset hound) skillfully manages to ruin his toys in a maximum of half an hour of playing, so I started looking for simple DIY projects for dog owners to be able to keep him entertained without having to sell a kidney. Pet toys are so expensive, especially when you have to buy new ones every week! And the thing is your little buddy doesn't care how much you've spent on his toys - all he wants is to have fun and spend time with you. For instance, Byron and I have a heck of a good time just running after an empty plastic bottle. Here are some easy DIY projects for dog owners both you and your furry pal will enjoy.

1

Crackling Sock

This is one of the simplest DIY projects for dog owners that your pet will absolutely love! You will need a sock - as you might have figured - and an empty plastic bottle. First of all, throw the cap away, as it can be a choking hazard. Squeeze the air out of the bottle, place it inside the sock and tie a knot at the end to make sure it stays in place. I'm sure you've already discovered your dog's love for socks, and the crackling plastic, along with the texture of the new toy, will make your buddy go nuts!

Kitchen-Towel Braids

Don't throw away the kitchen towels that are past their prime. Your pup will love them! Simply bunch together 3 old towels and tie them at one end with a strip of fabric. Braid them as you would your hair, and then firmly tie the other end too. That's all!

Sweet Potato Dog Chews

This is one of the DIY projects for dog owners that will take a bit longer, but it doesn't require much effort really. Cut a sweet potato lengthwise into thin slices (about 1/4 in. each). Don't peel it. Place the slices on a baking sheet and bake at 250 degrees for about 2 hours. Then, turn them over and bake for another 2 hours. Don't forget to allow them enough time to cool before giving them to your dog. Yum!

Paracord Chew Toy

Heavy chewers need a toy to match their strength, and Paracord rope may just be the best solution. It's not that expensive, it is very resistant and can be braided numerous ways to create tough chew toys. Use your imagination and see what you can come up with!

5

PVC Pipe Puzzle

Go to your local hardware store and look for various sizes of pipes and different end pieces. Cut the PVC to your desired lengths (10 in is good), put the end pieces on, and drill some holes into the pipes, through which you will put kibble in. Have fun watching your dog trying to get the kibble out!

Muffin Tin Puzzle

This one's simpler than the PVC puzzle, but a lot of fun as well! Get a 12 or 6-hole muffin tin, some really good dog treats, and a few tennis balls. Place a treat in every hole and then place a tennis ball on top of each treat. Now just put the muffin tin on the floor and call your pup to come and get his treats. He will feel like a true hunter trying to figure out how to get them out, while you'll have a good laugh watching him!

Denim Chew Toy

Denim is another pretty sturdy material that can make a great chew toy. Simply cut the lower part of your old denim jeans, roll it tightly, make a knot in the middle, and you're done!

Which one of these simple DIY projects for dog owners would you like to try? Do you know of any other toys and goodies for our furry friends that you can easily make at home?
